Quick overview: Dwight McCarthy was born on the wrong side of a city that doesn’t really have a right side. He strives towards some ideal in life but it just can’t be denied that he knows every back alley in Sin City.
One of the most common and sympathetic mistakes in humanity is to confuse a symptom with the underlying condition. An example of this would be a cough, which could just be a cough or a sign of serious lung conditions. As is the duty of a doctor to look at surrounding signs to define their patient it is the duty here to look into the surrounding factors in the life of Dwight, who seems defined by what surrounds him.
Dwight is very good at what it takes to survive in his home town. He’s very skilled at things like sneaking in and out, fighting, killing, crime in general. He hates this side of himself and thus seeks to live a different, highly restricted life. What he hates about his ability is that he feels it defines him, shows him where he belongs. Not seeking to live as a criminal he holds back essential parts of himself in the same blanket effort as a former alcoholic not daring to go places they know there to be alcohol. He doesn’t even allow himself to smoke, an undesirable but unrelated vice. In this Dwight makes the same misjudgment of himself that society makes of him. The reason I say this is as clear as a well taken photograph.
Dwight is a gifted photographer, a former employer going as far as to say he deserved a Pulitzer Prize. To be at all good at photography one has to know hot to adapt to and react to a given situation. As Dwight not only understands this but in fact excels it would imply that this adaptability is part of his personality would show itself in other factors of his life.
He does not want to be a bad person, which is what one could normally define ones self for doing bad things. He does not seem to make the leap that all he does is what is necessary to survive in a bad situation. When one lives under the worst of circumstances they must find levels of capability in themselves that most of us are never tested for. While some are not so fortunate Dwight not only passes the test but thrives under the strain.
Dwight excels in this as much as he does his photography. While the skills are particular the unifying distinction is that in all of these things he is willing to take matters into his own hands and go as far as he needs to in order to succeed. This is the mark of someone with a particular cunning and awareness of the world around them, whether or not they’re aware of themselves.
