Right, so the original column I had planned got started, but not finished, the potpourri column on Comic Con got some good feed back last time. So I’m just gonna do some quick hits for you this week about some stuff in the industry that I’ve been hearing, or reading.
Pat Lee talks about Dreamwave bankruptcy: Did you read this thing? I swear to God, did Newsarama pay for the exclusive? Have to bow down and let Pat do it his way? I mean, that interview was absolutely worthless from where I sit. Pat Lee just sat there making all sorts of (no pun intended) pat political statements offering nothing of any real value or substance. Basically saying “people can be pissed if they want, but I suffered too” right Pat, cause moving into a new penthouse, getting a new porche, and comics work almost immediately after your company folds is always a bad sign. I had been saying almost from the minute Dreamwave left Image that they’d die out, because the only books they seemed to be making were licensed books, and there’s just no way they could honestly keep the company afloat with such material. Because one of two things was bound to happen 1) lose the license (which is what happened), or 2) The audience for the material loses interest. IDW has a better base, so I imagine the Transformers acquisition is only going to be helping them all the more.
Wonder Woman Kills: See Monday’s column for a more extensive look at this story, and some thoughts on whether or not DC has pushed the envelope too far. I will however say in this space that whether or not you think DC crossed one of those big, uncross able lines, I do believe they HAVE to stick to this now, and I don’t mean for a few years, I mean FOREVER. Max Lord needs to stay dead, and Wonder Woman needs to own this, and not cop out. DC pushed a big huge button here, and they really need to stick to this one forever, like they have with Barry Allen being dead. Because frankly? The landscape of this industry lately is that “nothing is above retconning” Bucky is back, Jason Todd is back, I mean, seriously how long before Uncle Ben walks through the door in Spider-Man? It’s insane to me how much grave robbing the Big Two are doing these days in terms of going back to the past and undoing things that I don’t feel should have ever been undone just for the sake of making it “shocking”. I’ll probably hit these subjects more in the next two week’s worth of columns.
Sin City Sequel: You know, I’m looking forward to this, I really am, but I’m not sure I really like the idea of shooting “A Dame to Kill for” as the second Sin City film, because it’s basically going to be a prequel. I love how Miller fucks with time in the comics, and is so unapologetic about it (no “two days ago…” or anything like that, he just drops you into a story when he wants, and makes the reader figure the time frames out), I’m not so sure that’s going to translate so well to film. Hopefully, this movie is all just Dame, which is Dwight’s origin, and will have a good amount for Marv to do (although let’s not shoe horn more time for him in, ala the remake of “Manhunter” did with Hannibal Lecter), and should give Michael Clark Duncan a bit more to do, and some good fight scenes should he decide to come back. Looking forward to it, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have just the teensiest bit of trepidation .
Some stuff I’ve read and thoughts on it: I got the last issue of DD: Redemption, and I honestly really enjoyed the mini as a whole, pick up the trade when it comes out, it’s worth your time, and is based on an actual case. Really beginning to look to me like the JSA is getting an elevation in the DCU upcoming, jumped by an OMAC this month, and Hal Jordan will be heading out with Green Lantern Alan Scott next month, with implications the JSA may become involved in the Rann/Thanagar war. Also picked up a piece of a JLA/JSA crossover called DC: 2000, the second book. If anyone knows where I might be able to find the first part, please email me, as I’m interested in getting as much back JSA material as I can.
Slow news week: I know it’s the summer doldrums and all, but man, there is almost nothing happening news wise to get excited about, I mean, it really just feels like we’re treading water, and waiting for the next big thing to come along, which I think absolutely stinks. Not to mention probably the biggest story of the last week or so is the death of Jim Aparo, who was a real unsung hero of DC lore, if anything good can come of his passing, it’s that hopefully, some people are going to be more tempted to check out his work. My condolences to his family, if only more of us could have none the man, but his talent will live on forever.
