Disclaimer: The following opinions are those of the author and do not reflect the views of the other endless crew staff. In fact they all disagree with me and persecute me regularly.
Quick overview: When life began so did seven forces that governed it. This went on for about ten billion years until one decided he didn’t like the job.
To put the existence of one of the endless into human terms is a simple matter of revision of scale. Someone was born, got a job and then quit the job to find himself. That is the story of Destruction.
For most of us the idea of existence for a particular meaning is debatable. For the Endless it’s a fact of life. Each of them gives context to their realm of being and their shadows. Again allowing for scale the situation is that of a family business. In this there’s a given sense of necessity along with the minutia of the work. Things are done as much for the fact they have been done as they are for particular need. As a result of this if a family member should seek out of the business it tends to be seen more as a personal betrayal than a career choice. Of course betrayal is only one of the reasons someone would quit a job. Destruction quit his for a fairly common reason, to see if the work was all he was.
Anyone can get lost in their work if they try enough. The longer you’ve been doing something the easier this is. For reasons ranging from passion to inertia to simple financial stability very few people get to act out any meaningful escape from the common structure. The Endless are anything but without resources and thus Destruction saw to his retirement very much like any of us would.
Reasons for leaving a job are, like the reasons for staying in one, myriad. However, as cause leads effect the why at times will lead the how. In this case Destruction quit his job as he had lost his taste for it. As such it only makes sense that he would explore the opposite. To create one must first destroy and that’s exactly what he does. His adventures range from nation building to construction to artistic attempts of varying degrees of success. What makes this interesting is that someone who was and is the master of one craft is attempting others he knows nothing about. The will to learn while at an advanced state is rare and speaks of the man in an aspect not at all exclusive to his function, that being his courage.
It takes courage to walk away from a familiar setting. It takes courage to attempt new things. It takes courage to walk away from everything and everyone you know. It takes courage to be kind without the gift of ignorance. These traits are some of the best in us but not freakish in occurrence. The true expression of the scale of Destruction is his ability to laugh in the face of failure. No one is good at everything and given his immortal nature Destruction has had time to find many things he’s not good at. This is a remarkable ability in that, to coin a phrase, to err is human.
The Endless are not meant to be human but rather splintered aspects. However they regard each other as family, pursue interests and bear the full range of emotional reactions. Only Destruction and to a lesser degree his sister Death seem to realize what this means. No one is one mere thing. Life seeks to be a complete and whole entitiy. In this one has to be willing to look both in and outside of themselves to see everything their life means and what it means to be alive.
