Quick overview: Nicholas Fury answered the same call to duty many young men did during the Second World War. He liked saving the world from fanatical madmen so much that he’s been doing it ever since.
While his further exploits would be shaped, nay, defined by the war this was not the root of his cause. Nick started very much the same way any of us do, with his family. Nicks father was Jack Fury, a legendary pilot in World War 1. The emulation Nick made of this would suggest nurture rather than nature in that he followed more in spirit than in the exact occupational line. First Nick followed his father into piloting, becoming an accomplished stunt pilot. While this may seem insignificant given the frivolous nature but indeed it proves the theme in his life. Stunt piloting isn’t a job someone can be “just okay” at and live to tell about it. Neither was his job in the war.
In World War 2 Nick wore the rank of sergeant and the duty of a field commander. That is to say he led troops in battle. To give orders while acting ones self is a precarious position to say the least but the high degree of success speaks to him being well suited for it. War is known to shape the lives of those inside it. That particular war, like the rest, had a particular flavor. The war was clear in a purpose that direly needed to be achieved. The nazi agenda was evil and by definition that which stands in opposition to evil is good. In fighting that war in the field Nick learned both that there is right and wrong and the will to enforce right. This only clashed with the illusions of his next job.
It’s a cliché in the intelligence world that there are no “good guys” and “bad guys.” Nick knows better and has been on the top of various spy games for decades eventually leading him to leadership of THE spy game, namely, S.H.I.E.L.D. Spying, like soldiering and like stunt piloting before, demands precision and though seemingly less direct the results do speak for themselves. To establish said results took a lot of time and how he got that time says a lot about who Nick is.
During the war Nick was injured in battle and given something called the infinity formula which was designed to slow or even halt the aging process, given yearly injections. Conditionally Nick is all but immortal. He achieved both his odd status as well as the means to sustain it through his occupation. While many feel enveloped by our career paths few are given the clarity of definition Nick has here. While there is an apparent question of motivation there is an equally apparent answer. Many thrive in the world he does not believing in or enforcing right or wrong. Given that Nick has survived his way it stands the reason he has the resources to exist their way. Clearly he simply chooses not to. Given that this is simple more in ideal than execution it takes will, the likes of which he learned when he first started fighting the world’s evils. And of course the key point, he’s remained a good guy
