“The Dark Knight” delivers and expands upon everything “Batman Begins” promised us.
All sequels are expected to expand upon or further explore the world of the first. In the case of a Batman movie what we’re shown is a world that has Batman in it. The Gotham City portrayed is one that’s connected to our real world so closely that the works of vigilantes and madmen have no choice but to ring true. A sense of the existence of these characters is what makes this film great. Of course the characters need actors to play them.
Not to gloss over the solid and emotional work of the ensemble cast but I have to exist within a world too. The lions share of attention for this movie is for the late Heath Ledger in his role as the Joker. Rumors of how well be came a madman being what lead to his death persist.. I will not comment on that. What can be said is that he captures the utter madness that Joker embodies in a way movie goers have never seen it done. You believe this is someone who opposes Batman.
Batman himself, played by the returning Christian Bale, is exactly what he should be after some time in his duel roles. Bale captures the duality of being both Bruce Wayne and Batman with both the dedication and the tragity true to such a character. Being believable in both the drama and the thrilling fight scenes is no easy task but here it is achieved nicely.
The story questions humanity in the was great fiction does. Who we think we are and what we hold dear are exploited in just the way someone like the Joker would. In his insanity we’re forced to question ourselves and in that way he has his victory. I’m giving “The Dark Knight” four stars only because that’s all they’ll let me have.
